NL Sep 8 1993 - "Handbell choir plays at state fair" Recently, five Nordonia High School Handbell Choir members, three parents and the director of the group traveled to the Ohio State Fair to participate in the 1993 All-Ohio State Fair Handbell Ring.
On each of the three Saturdays during the fair's run, ringers from around the state gathered in Columbus to present an afternoon full of entertainment.
The Nordonia contingent joined with approximately 80 other ringers from communities including Akron, Marion, Jackson and Westerville to present five concerts in the Janis Center Auditorium on Aug 21.
After rehearsing throughout the summer in their own communities, the ringers met for four hours of rehearsal in Westerville the day before the performances.
Concert selections included original handbell music, patriotic and novelty selections, such as "Outbursts of Joy," "America the Beautiful," "Come Christians Join to Sing," (Carmen, Ohio), "God Bless America," "Chopsticks," and "Goody Two-Shoes Fly-By-Night Shuffle."
At the conclusion of the concert, ringers participated in the daily parade around the fairgrounds.
Denise Holmes of Marietta directed the rehearsals and performances, while the entire event was organized by Flo Shafer, a handbell director and clinician in the Columbus area.
NHS student participants were ... Dan Roberts.
Adult chaperones who attended rehearsals throughout the summer and rang in the State Fair concerts are Dave Roberts and his wife, Jim Virost, and Jim Storry, director of the NHS Handbell Choir.
